Identifying Teacher Quality and Improving the Teacher Selection Process
There is clear evidence on the importance of teacher quality in promoting student achievement and positive long-run outcomes for students. A key element in improving teacher quality is hiring the candidates who are most likely to be superior teachers. This study will examine what types of information about potential hires are predictive of later teacher performance and then test mechanisms for conveying that information to principles. The ultimate goal is to allow principals to make better informed hiring decisions that ultimately lead to improvements in teacher quality.
Project
Teacher Transfer Policies and Teacher Mobility
Teachers frequently switch schools early in the careers, with teachers often moving to schools with high average test scores and fewer disadvantaged students. In this study we investigate how district transfer policies influence teacher mobility decisions within and across school districts and ultimately the distribution of teachers across schools.
